On Saturday, the Wildcats traveled to Gainesville, GA for the Coach Wood Invitational hosted by Mill Creek HS, widely considered the most competitive XC meet in Georgia. The JV girls toed the line to start the day in the JV Championship race, and finished in a strong 7th place (out of 18 teams). Leading the way was Callie Dill, who finished 25th overall. She was aided by great performances from Sophia Tarrago, Olivia Vergura, and Ellie Vergura.
The girls Varsity were up next in the Varsity Championship race, with most of the top schools in Georgia competing. The girls improved upon their performance last year and also finished 7th (out of 20 teams), defeating some of the strongest squads in the state. The trio of Ansley Heavern, Kelly May Sheehan, and Samantha Cameron led the way, all placing in the top 27, and were helped by great races from Ellie Conoley and Ann-Marie Sills to round out the top 5 for the Wildcats.
After a few hours, it was the boys turn. The JV boys fought their way in a very crowded race (600 runners!) to finish 18th out of 33 teams. They were led by Carter Anderson, and also saw strong races from Troy Anders and Jason Hughes. The boys Varsity rounded out the day in the Varsity Gold race. The conditions were more challenging by this point in the day, but the boys battled and finished 21st as a team, led by quality performances from Benson Ross, Cadmiel Velazquez, and Max Noto.
Showing up to cheer on her former team, it was great to see Katie Martin ('12) cheer on her brother Jack in his last high school XC race. Full race results from Saturday can be found here.
This Week:
This week everyone will be racing on Saturday at the Region 6-AAAAA XC Championships at Druid Hills Middle School. If the Wildcats finish in the top 4 teams, they will qualify for the State Championships on November 8th. Race lineups will be announced the middle of this week, and the schedule is as follows:
8:15 AM - Varsity Boys (Top 7)
9:00 AM - Varsity Girls (Top 7)
9:45 AM - JV Boys (All)
10:30 AM - JV Girls (All)
11:15 AM - Awards Ceremony
Since Dunwoody is in charge of this meet, there will be NO BUS transportation to this meet, so athletes are responsible for their own transportation to the meet. We hope this means we will have a lot of fans cheering on the Wildcats, many of whom will be racing for the last time this season! This will also be the last week of practice for the majority of the team.
Parents, we will also be asking for some volunteer help in assisting with the administration of the meet, so please look for an email and help out if you can.
As we draw to the close of the season, it's important to stay focused on finishing strong. We hope to see many season best performances from our Wildcats on Saturday! Here are the times for the season so far:
