Homecoming Week 2013 brought another busy week for the Wildcats! On Tuesday, the Wildcats traveled back to Druid Hills MS for their third DeKalb County meet of the season. Cooler weather brought faster times for most of the team, and most of the Varsity and JV Championship athletes got another look at the course that will play a big part in the team’s successes over the next couple of weeks! Great performances could be found from beginning to end of the mass of Wildcat runners, highlighted by great races from Brandon Shockley and Sunny Sharma on the boys side, and Alyssa Farnell and Jordan Srochi on the girls side. After a wet run on Wednesday (and the return of the “Snake” route), the Wildcats marched in the annual DHS Homecoming Parade on Thursday, and were back at it Friday morning for another great morning workout. Thanks to Mrs. Herod for volunteering her truck for use in the parade! This week brings two meets for different groups of athletes. On Thursday, the top 8th-10th graders on the team will travel to Druid Hills MS for the DeKalb County Junior Varsity Championships (the list of those participating has already been announced and can be found on the website). The Wildcats have a great tradition of success in this 2-mile competition, and are looking forward to a great showing in 2013! On Friday, the Varsity teams will depart DHS at 11:30 AM to travel to Cary, NC to participate in the Great American XC Festival on Saturday. This is one of the biggest meets on the East Coast, and will be a great experience for our Varsity runners against some elite competition. Because of these two meets, there will only be practice this week from Monday to Wednesday, with NO practice Thursday afternoon or Friday morning. As the weather continues to cool down, we look forward to seeing our runners get faster and faster! Go Wildcats! Congratulations to the following athletes who will be representing Dunwoody at the DeKalb County Championships over the next couple of weeks. Both of the meets are at Druid Hills Middle School. We will run 7 of the following 10 in each of the following races.
JV County Championships (Thursday, Oct. 3rd) Boys: Jackson Watson, Max Marion, Jerrett Lupoli, Ethan Herod, Paul Weinshenker, Ben Planer, Samuel Lucius, Brandon Shockley, Jake Planer, and Charlie Ziegler. Girls: Samantha Cameron, Ally Womble, Kelly May Sheehan, Chloe Thomas, Julie Hensley, Sydney Drew, Olivia Vergura Elayna Harris, Athena Zhang, and Addison Duke. Varsity County Championships (Tuesday, Oct. 8th) Boys: Blake Tiede, Cadmiel Velazquez, Quinton Johnson, Noah Goldstein, Owen Firebaugh, Benson Ross, Cullen Jones, Noah Doherty, Max Noto, and Drew D'Alessandro. Girls: Alex Cameron, Ann-Marie Sills, Ansley Heavern, Ellie Conoley, Jennifer Hardister, Callie Dill, Shanel Stewart, Brook Joyner, Emily Cyr, and Alyssa Farnell. All runners should have received items pre-ordered at registration, including the new fleece pullovers. Just in time for the cooler weather!
If there are any runners who did not receive their team tee shirt or lanyard at registration or at practice we have restocked them and they are available. We have also restocked the very popular red Nike Pro Combat sports bras (complete with blue embroidered paw print). They are $27 each. We do have some extra fleece jackets available, we are very limited in small sizes. They are $30. If you are looking for some of the classic styles (hoodies, pajama pants, men’s mesh shorts) these are available in various sizes. Please contact [email protected] for questions regarding any of the above items. With no meet this week, the Wildcats were able to get in a good week of workouts to prepare them for the second half of our season. Highlights included three challenging workouts and the annual International Big 21 pushup and ab workout! We heard numbers called in Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, French, Latin, chemical elements, and Presidents,
among others! This week, the Wildcats travel back to Druid Hills Middle School on Tuesday for our final DeKalb County Meet. All high schoolers (unless injured) will participate in the 3 mile race at 5:15 PM. All 8th graders WILL run in the 2 mile race at 5:45 PM. This is a change, as we were previously informed that there was no 2 mile race on Tuesday. We arehappy that there is, so the 8th graders have another chance to race! On Thursday, there will be no practice because it is the annual DHS Homecoming Parade. Athletes should plan to walk to the cul-de-sac in Vermack Court immediately after school so that we can walk in the parade. Athletes should wear their 2013 team shirt. Thanks to the Herods for volunteering the use of their truck in the parade. Athletes can bring candy to hand out during the parade, but no candy should be thrown! Again, because of the parade, there will be no practice on Thursday, so please plan to have a ride for your athlete after the parade concludes (approximately 4:30 PM). After Tuesday's race, we transition into "Championship" mode for the remainder of the season! With meets like the County (Varsity and JV) Championships, the Great American XC Festival in NC, the Coach Wood Invitational, and Region and State Championships, cross country should be a priority for those that hope to compete in these meets. Use your time off from meets these couple weekends to catch up or (gasp!) get ahead in your schoolwork. This will help us to reduce stress and outside distractions as we focus on the goals for our season. Go Wildcats! Quick update - For the County Meet on Tuesday, September 24th, all high schoolers will run the 3 mile at 5:15pm. All 8th graders will run the 2 mile at 5:45pm.
Homecoming Parade is Thursday, September 26th and the Cross Country Team is in need of a pickup truck or two to accompany the team in the parade. If you are able to help, please contact Coach Boucher. It was another busy week for the Wildcats, who participated in a DeKalb County Meet on Tuesday, and traveled up to South Carolina on Friday to participate in the Furman XC Classic on Saturday. On Tuesday, most Wildcats participated in the second DeKalb County Meet at Druid Hills Middle School. Most runners improved upon their times from the first County meet, showing the hard work that the team has put in over the past few (hot) weeks. Great performances were put in on the boys side by Nathan Bryant, Gerardo Romero, and Jackson Watson. The girls were paced by great performances from Emma Nortje, Jasmin Rubio, and Samantha Cameron. On Friday, the team traveled to South Carolina for the first overnight trip of the season. After a scenic pre-race run and hearty dinner, the annual trivia competition was taken by the team "So Unsmart We Need 9." On Saturday, the team participated in the inaugural Furman XC Classic. The girls varsity team placed 3rd out of 15 teams, and were the first finishers from Georgia. The Wildcats were paced by top 10 performances from Alex Cameron and Ann-Marie Sills. The boys varsity team placed 8th out of 17 teams, and saw great performances from Quinton Johnson and Cullen Jones. Many of the JV runners set season or career bests on the fast Furman golf course, and the girls team was led by Sydney Drew and her tremendous 3rd place finish (leading the team to a 3rd place team finish), along with great performances from Emma Nortje and Andrea Carrasquilla. The boys JV team finished 8th and were highlighted by great races from Jerrett Lupoli and Ian Kelley. A special thanks to our chaperones Deb Cameron, Meg Firebaugh, and Don and Shannon Dill for their time and effort to make this trip possible. A special thanks to Don Dill for his help with our excellent accommodations and meal for the trip. We have great parent support and that is what makes these trips a Wildcat tradition! An additional treat was getting to see a couple of Wildcat alumni runners participate in the collegiate races early in the morning. Both Charlotte Collins (now running for Berry College) and James Dwyer (now running for Clemson) had great races and it was great catching up with them after their races. An additional shout-out goes to DHS alum Kailey Williams (now running at UA-Huntsville) who finished in the top 10 (and 3rd on her team) in her first collegiate race on Saturday in Alabama, finishing with a PR. It is great to see our Wildcats running well at the next level! This week, the Wildcats get a much needed rest with no meets on the schedule, but that does allow for a great week of practice to get prepared for the second half of our season. The next meet for most of the team is Tuesday, September 24th at our final DeKalb County meet. Please note that this meet will be for high schoolers only, as there is only a 3 mile Varsity race offered at this meet, and 8th graders are unfortunately not allowed to participate in the Varsity race. The next couple of weeks will help to determine our success in late October and November, so it is already important to make smart decisions and get proper rest, hyrdation, and meals so that our workouts can be high quality. Championship races in October and November are won in August and September! Go Wildcats! Bryan Boucher |
