2019 Dunwoody Cross Country

Coach's Corner: August 28, 2016

8/28/2016

Congratulations to the Wildcat Cross Country Team for outstanding performances this past Saturday at the Wesleyan Invite.  The girls’ team came out on top in both the Varsity and JV Races.  The varsity girls were led by Kelly May, Sam, Emma, Anna, and Ally totaling 39 points.  KC, Ellie, Olivia, Claire, and Kate led the JV Girls to 36 total points.

Strong performances from the boys’ team put both the Varsity and JV Boys in 4th place as a team.  Max, Jackson, Sam, Phineas, and Leighton led the Varsity boys with 102 total points.  And the JV Boys were led by Brandon, Jan, Cade, John, and Ben with 74 total points.  Complete results from the Wesleyan meet can be found at

http://ga.milesplit.com/meets/244485/results#.V8MexSgrLIU

Following the Wesleyan meet, many runners represented DHS XC at the Leadership Fun Shop in the afternoon where they sharpened their leadership skills and had fun with former DHS Coach Tom Bass.  Thanks to everyone who participated in this great event.

Saturday ended with the KickOff DHS XC Cookout at Brook Run that evening.  Thanks to everyone – runners, parents, and siblings who came out and participated in frisbee, football, and of course the Scavenger Hunt.  A special thanks to everyone who brought side dishes, deserts, and all the other great food.  More importantly – thanks to our grillmasters!!

The Varsity Team will race at the Clara Bowl at Berry College this Saturday Sept 3rd.  We can race the top 10 runners in this event.  The race rosters will be posted on Wednesday.  The JV team will not be racing this week, and we’ll use this time to get in some quality workouts before their next meet on Tuesday Sept 6th.  Also – be sure to mark Thursday Sept 8th on your calendar for our ChickFilA Spirit Night at Perimeter Point.

Our overnight trip is scheduled for Sept 16th and 17th in Charlotte, NC at the Hares and Hounds Invitational.  50 runners are invited on this trip based upon attendance, years on the team, and performance.  More information to come as we get closer to the event.

Go Wildcats!

Spirit Wear, Uniforms and Dues Update

8/22/2016

We are working very hard to fulfill all of the orders placed.  Please know that if you ordered gear or paid your dues, we have your order and we will make sure you receive what you ordered.  We have had a couple of growing pain glitches with our new on-line ordering system - we mentioned a few at the parent meeting last week.  We have had over 160 orders placed by team members and their parents!  I personally apologize for any mistakes that we have made.  Know that we will correct all of these and get everything straightened out.  Here is the current status:

Team Shirts:  If you paid your dues and have not received your team shirt, I will be at both the County Meet on Tuesday and the Wesleyan Meet on Saturday with the shirts.  Come and get your shirt from me then.  If you paid but are not going to be at either meet, I will get it to you at Monday's practice next week.

Uniforms:  If you ordered uniforms over the summer the uniforms are in with the exception of small boys' singlets.  We expect those to arrive this week.  If you ordered boys' uniforms or girls' singlets this past week, that order will be placed this week.  We will let you know when we have an expected delivery date.  Our vendor has had a terrible time getting some items from Nike - we are working with our vendor and she is working closely with Nike to get the uniforms as soon as possible.

With the girls' uniform shorts, we have placed the order for the people who talked to Melissa Canalichio at the parent meeting last week.  We expect those to arrive early next week and we will have them printed as soon as possible.  Please read this closely:  If you need girls' shorts and did not talk to Melissa at the meeting last week, you MUST EMAIL MELISSA TO ORDER YOUR GIRLS' UNIFORM SHORTS.  Please email mdcanalichio@yahoo.com to order your girls' shorts.   Please understand that the reason we have this issue with the girls' shorts is because we were not satisfied with the quality of the new shorts we ordered and we did not believe that the girls would like them.  Thank you for your patience as we resolve this issue.

If you have any other questions or issues with uniforms, please email Melissa Canalichio at mdcanalichio@yahoo.com.

Spirit Wear:  If you ordered spirit wear over the summer it is in!  If you did not receive your spirit wear at the parent meeting last week or at practice Monday morning, please contact Amy Pegues at amy.pegues@gmail.com.  If you ordered spirit wear this past week, that order will be placed this week.  We will let you know when we have an expected delivery date.

If you have any other questions or issues regarding spirit wear, please email Amy Pegues at amy.pegues@gmail.com.

Brook Run Party - Saturday, August 27th, 5-8pm

8/22/2016

Party for Parents, Runners and Family!!!!

Picture
The much anticipated Dunwoody Cross Country Team Party is upon us.  Please review everything carefully.  We are very excited to see everyone at the big event!

Time / Date / Location:  The Team Party will be this Saturday, August 27th from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at the pavilivon located in Brook Run Park in Dunwoody (see map below)

What will be supplied?  The team will supply hamburgers, hotdogs and veggie burgers.  The team also will be bringing napkins, plates, forks, spoons, knives, ketchup, mustard and relish.

What should you bring?  Each family attending should bring something to share broken out by year in school.  Seniors bring appetizers, Juniors bring side dishes, Sophomores bring side dishes, and Freshmen bring desserts.  Please bring this in some type of dish that can either be thrown away at the end of the evening or that you will be responsible for taking home.  Try and avoid using Great-Great-Grandmother's heirloom serving tray.  Please bring a serving utensil for your dish.

What about beverages?  Please bring your own beverages to this event including water.  This is a non-alcoholic event.  Thank you for understanding.

What should I wear?  This is a casual event, so dress comfortably.  But please wear sensible shoes (see schedule below).

Schedule of events:
  • 5pm - Arrive at Brook Run Park
  • 5:20pm - Fun and Exciting Event Starts (It's a secret, but it is very fun and there are awards!!)
  • 6:30pm - Food is served
  • 7:50pm - Everyone helps clean up
  • 8:00pm - You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here.

How do I sign up -- **** Most Important Part ****:  There are two things you need to do.  First, there is a Google Form that you need to fill out letting us know how many are attending and how much food you want.  Please be reasonable when ordering.  This event is not intended to supply your dinner needs for the week and there are no To-Go bags.  Second, click on the link below and let us know what you are bringing to share.  Please look at what others are bringing so we don't end up with 28 pounds of potato salad!!

Link:  What You Are Bringing

Chefs Needed:   We need 4-5 people to run the grills.  Please bring your favorite grilling utensils (we have none!).  Your help would be appreciated.  If you want to help out with grilling, please click on the link below and let us know we can count on you.

Coach's Corner: Aug 22 - Let the Races Begin

8/22/2016

Let the Races Begin!

After a grueling Place Race last Wednesday, the Dunwoody Wildcats Cross Country Team is ready to begin its racing season.  The race rosters are posted outside of the coach's classrooms.  For the most part, runners #1-40 from the Place Race will race Saturday at Wesleyan School; and #41-80 and all 8th Graders will race Tuesday at Druid Hills Middle School.

Our first race of the season is at Druid Hills Middle School on Tuesday August 23rd.  The 3 mile Varsity Race begins at 5:15pm; and the 2 mile JV Race begins at 5:45pm.  (All 8th graders will run the 2 mile JV Race).  All athletes racing (except 8th graders) must ride the bus to the meet; which leaves at 3:30pm from the DHS gym.  After all the races are complete and the post-race team meeting, students may ride home with their parents after receiving a coach's permission.

Just a reminder that students must wear their DHS uniform top and shorts for races.  No jewelry (earrings, rings, metal barrettes are allowed).  Any tshirts, compression shorts, etc worn under the uniform must be solid black in color.  For this race only - any athlete that has not yet received an XC uniform should wear navy shorts and their Dunwoody XC Tshirt.

On Saturday, we will race at the Wesleyan School Invitational.  There will be no bus for this meet.  With the exception of Varsity Boys, all athletes competing should arrive at Wesleyan School by 7:30am.  Please carpool as much as possible. Only the top 40 boy and girls runners will compete in this invitational; as posted on the race rosters.  Again, students may not leave until all races and the team meeting is complete.

Boys Varsity: 8:30am
Girls Varsity: 9:00am
Boys JV: 9:40am
Girls JV: 10:10am

Due to the split squads this week, our practice schedule will be a little different.
Monday (August 22nd) 6am: Practice for the Entire Team

Tuesday (August 23rd):
No practice for Wesleyan Runners - Please meet on your own and get in 5-6 miles easy distance

Wednesday (August 24th):
No practice for runners that ran the Tuesday County Race - Please get in easy 3 mile recovery run on your own.

Thursday (August 25th) 3:30pm: Practice for the Entire Team

Friday (August 26th): 6:00am: Practice for the Entire Team

Thanks to all the parents and guardians that made it out Wednesday night to the Booster Club Meeting.  We enjoyed meeting you and talking about the upcoming season.  The coaches are extremely excited to start the Racing Season, and hope to see you out at races to cheer the team on!

GO WILDCATS!

Parent Meeting, Uniforms, Spiritwear, Dues and More!!!!

8/14/2016

Please read the entire post --- Lots of Great Information!!!!

Parent Meeting - There is a mandatory parent meeting this week.  It will be held on Wednesday Night, August 17th at 7pm in the DHS Cafeteria.  Food and beverages are NOT being served but there will be lots of great information about the season that you can chew on.  If you placed orders for spirit wear and uniforms earlier in the summer, you will be able to pick up your gear.  If you paid your team dues by Tuesday Night, August 16th, you will be able to pick up your team shirt.  The coaches are looking forward to seeing all of you there.

Spirit Wear/Uniforms - If you placed your order for uniforms and/or spirit wear at the beginning of the summer, please come to the Parent Meeting and you will be able to pick it up!!  The Spirit Wear Team (Amy and Kate) and the Uniform Team (Melissa) are excited to see you.  If you were not able to take advantage of the pre-season ordering, good news, the store is now open again, but for a limited time only.  The store will close again this Friday, August 19th and will not open again until May 2017!!! So now is your best time to pick up that spirit wear or uniform that you are anxious to get.  Deliveries for items purchased this week will be as soon as the items come in.

DHS XC Vintage Gear - DHS XC seems to not be able to sell out of everything every year.  Our struggle is your opportunity!  The selection is limited, but the prices could not be better.  Our Vintage Gear Team will be on hand Wednesday night to sell you early model DHS XC gear like tee shirts, fleeces and much, much more.  Bring cash because at these prices, we cannot afford banking fees (seriously!!).  All items will be sold on first come first served (cash only) and you don't want to miss out!!!

Team Dues - Runners have done a great job of paying their dues.  Thanks so much.  If you have not had a chance to pay your team dues yet, please do so as soon as possible.  You can make your payment in the DHS XC Store.  Everyone who pays their dues by Tuesday, August 16th will be able to pick up their team shirt at the Mandatory Parent Meeting.  A member of the Team Shirt Team will be there handing out the great looking 2016 season shirt.  If you are not able to pay by Tuesday, you will still be able to receive your shirt, but delivery will be set at some time in the future.  Please remember that the dues go to pay for meets, equipment for the team, team expenses and to pay the coaches.  We are one of very few teams that do not have a mandatory fund raiser.

Team Party - Save The Date - Saturday, August 27th at 5pm.  There will be a team get together at Brook Run Park in Dunwoody.  There will be Food, Fun and Fantastic camaraderie.  You don't want to miss it!  Details will be coming out soon.  Mark your calendar.  The DHS XC Social Team thanks you.

We look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday.  If you have any questions, bring them Wednesday, they probably will be answered then.

Thanks.

DHS XC Booster Club Executive Committee

Coach's Corner - Sunday, August 7th, 2016

8/7/2016

Thanks to everyone for a great first week of Cross Country practice.  We've had a great turnout for some nice, cool, morning runs.  So far, over 100 students have come out to run with us this season.  The coaches are super excited to work with such a dedicated group of runners.  The first week of practice included the infamous Day 1 Circuit Workout, some easy distance runners, and concluded with the never before seen version of Zimmerman's game of Cross Country Tag.  We hope everybody had a great summer, and look forward to the first week of school.

A few reminders for the upcoming week:

Our practice schedule for Aug 8 - Aug 11 will be 3:30pm to 5:00pm.   Please make sure you hydrate throughout the school day, wear cool clothes to practice, and bring a full water bottle.  It's going to be hot and humid, so please be prepared.  Also, be sure to eat a good, balanced breakfast, lunch, and dinner throughout the week.  All runners must be off campus by 5:15pm.  Please talk with a coach if you have any questions.  On Friday Aug 12th, we will have our first morning practice from 6:00am - 7:00am. Please do not park in any faculty spots during morning practice.

Wed Aug 10th: Senior Captain Applications are due to Coach Hendrickson
Thurs Aug 11th: Last day for any new students to join the team.

As a reminder, every runner must have
Valid Physical Form (all four completed pages)
Proof of Insurance
Concussion Form
