squads, who both qualified for the State Championships in Carrollton on November 9th.
The Varsity girls led off the meet with another thrilling battle with Region rival Lakeside. With frost still on the ground, the Wildcats battled back and forth with the Vikings, and, when all the places were counted, the Wildcats had won their second straight Region Championship by 1 point, 32 to 33. This is only the fourth time in school history that the girls are Region Champions (1993, 1995, and 2012 being the others). The Wildcats were led by Alex Cameron, who finished 2nd for the third
straight year in our Region meet. She was followed closely behind by top 10 performances from Ansley Heavern, Ann-Marie Sills, and Ellie Conoley. The Wildcats will look forward to defending their State title in two weeks!
The Varsity boys took to the line hoping to qualify for their 6th straight trip to Carrollton in a competitive boys race. They successfully accomplished their goal with a 3rd place finish (besting North Atlanta by 1 point for 3rd). The boys were led by Blake Tiede, who earned a medal for this 10th place finish, and was followed close behind a by a tight pack of Cadmiel Velazquez, Quinton Johnson, Noah Goldstein, and Jackson Watson.
The real highlights of the day came in both JV races, which saw many of our hardworking seniors run the last race of their career, and, in great style, we saw an enormous amount of PR's and time improvements from earlier meets this season. Many of our runners dropped between 1 to 3 minutes off their previous season best! In the girls race, some of biggest improvements came from Meg Dubsky, Sydney Holmes, Cassidy Drew, Andie Spearman, and Becca Martin. The boys were not to be outdone, and great improvements were highlighted by Tyler Jones, Luis Reyes, Cody Wertheimer, and Joe Davis. The day concluded with a rousing Wildcat Pride chant led by Owen Firebaugh.
Thank you to all of our volunteers for helping us administer the meet yesterday, as well as to Lakeside for their great course setup. Thanks also to all of our parents for their great support both yesterday and throughout the season, we hope to see many of you in Carrollton on November 9th!
While practice is officially over for those not on our Region Varsity rosters (top 12), we would like to hold a brief meeting after school on Monday down at the track. This meeting will be over no later than 4 PM. 8th graders do not need to attend the meeting, and any information given out at the meeting will be given to the 8th graders at a later time or via email. The Varsity teams will hold practice throughout the week as usual. We will send out more information about the State Meet and other end-of-season activities next week.
Thanks as always for your support, and Go Wildcats!
